Natural Medicine has been around for centuries. It had helped numerous people even before pharmaceuticals ever existed. Using bark, berries, leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, and fruits of different plants and trees, people who use natural medicine can treat various ailments and conditions.
There’s a high chance that even you have tried using natural medicine or, as we call it today, home remedies to cure a particular cold, dull a nagging headache, or get a good night’s sleep. Maybe you learned it from your parents or read about it online when you rushed to cure a specific illness.
Here’s a list of natural medicines that helps me through my daily life:
1. Turmeric - Also known as Curcuma longa and Indian Saffron, it is one of the most consumed herbs in the world because of its numerous health benefits. The Chinese have utilized turmeric for thousands of years because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and digestive health benefits. Today, even physicians who practice Western medicine recommend it to their patients.
Turmeric is also believed to help improve blood flow, ease abdominal pain and help restore disrupted menstrual cycles.
Many people consume turmeric as tea; some apply it topically in powder form, and some take it in capsule form daily. These supplements are usually taken in 500mg doses.
2. Peppermint - It is a natural hybrid between two types of mints, water mint and spearmint, and it grows throughout Europe and North America.
Peppermint has many health benefits, and it can be an essential oil that you can apply to the skin and inhale. It is also a common flavoring agent in food and beverages, and its fragrance is used in cosmetics and soaps. Today, peppermint helps alleviate Irritable Bowel Syndrome, other digestive issues, common colds, sinus infections, headaches and other conditions.
Like most herbal medicine, peppermint can be taken orally in tea and capsule form or applied topically in oil form.
3. Honey - It is the world’s natural sweetener and is a great alternative to sugar. Honey is a syrupy liquid that honeybees create from nectar. Because of its deep flavor it is used in different food and recipes.
Honey offers a number of health benefits and plays a huge role in many home remedies and alternative medical treatments. It is rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids; these help neutralize reactive oxygen species in our bodies and prevent diabetes and heart disease. Honey can also be applied topically on wounds and burns because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey is also known as an effective cough suppressant in children aged 1-7.
Honey can be taken orally and is also safe to be applied topically.
4. Coconut - There are a lot of products that can be derived from coconut; there’s coconut oil, coconut water, and coconut cream, to name a few. Coconut is highly nutritious and is known to have multiple health benefits.
Coconuts are low in carbohydrates and are high in fiber and fat, which is greatly helpful in blood sugar control. The high fiber content of coconuts also helps with digestion which in turn improves insulin resistance.
Antioxidants are also present in coconuts; these antioxidants can help neutralize harmful compounds called free radicals and, according to one study, could also protect against DNA damage.
Coconut oil can easily be incorporated into our daily lives, it can be taken in our bodies and it can also be applied on our skin.
Coconut is a highly nutritious fruit that has countless health benefits. Particularly, coconut is abundant in antioxidants, has potent antibacterial properties, and may support better blood sugar control.
5. Ginger - is a root crop that originates from Southeast Asia; it is one of the healthiest spices on the planet. It contains gingerol, which is rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Ginger is known to help relieve nausea, especially in pregnant women who experience morning sickness. Studies also found that people who use ginger as a supplementary treatment to their osteoarthritis have experienced a significant reduction in their pain and disability. Ginger also aids in relieving chronic indigestion since it speeds up the emptying of the stomach. Lastly, ginger helps lower bad cholesterol like LDL; its effects are comparable to drugs like atorvastatin.
Superfood is an understatement for ginger, it contains diverse nutrients and bioactive compounds that are beneficial to our bodies, and it should be a staple in any household.
6. Lavender - It is a flowering plant from the mint family that is distinctly known for its light shade of purple and fragrant floral scent.
Lavender essential oil is an effective remedy for insomnia and is helpful in the overall improvement of sleep quality. It may also be used dermatologically; you can apply a lavender essential oil to skin affected with eczema, acne, or other skin blemishes. Lavender contains antioxidant properties, and can also aid in healing wounds.
Mental health is also improved, especially when the lavender scent is inhaled; multiple studies suggest it helps lower anxiety and depression.
Lavender can be consumed in different forms like lavender oil, capsules and supplements, and lavender tea.
7. Cannabidiol (CBD) - Cannabidiol or CBD is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis sativa plant in oil form and mixed with other oils like hemp and seed oil before it is consumed. It was first discovered in 1940 but was first approved as a drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2018 under the name “Epidiolex” for seizure treatment in children with severe epilepsy.
Today, CBD has been extensively researched, and multiple studies suggest that it has different ways on how it could be beneficial to our health.
CBD has calming properties, which is perhaps why it is so well-known. Many tests concluded that people who take CBD perform with less anxiety than people who receive a placebo or people who don’t take CBD at all.
In other instances, CBD can treat epileptic symptoms in children and adults. It is proven to reduce the frequency of patients’ seizures compared to those who don’t take CBD.
CBD, when applied topically, can also treat pain in a localized area. Multiple tests proved a significant reduction in intense, sharp pains in those who used the topical CBD compared to those who used the placebo. Most of these natural medicines have no side effects, but they may still be harmful if we use them excessively. Remember that natural medicine isn’t always practical. You should still ask your doctor how these home remedies can be beneficial.
Multiple studies and clinical trials prove the effectiveness of home remedies, these are still not reassurances that it will work on conditions that you may experience.
